As a wicket-keeper in the U-19 World Cup 2006, he had 23 catches and 6 stumpings to his name. He also averaged 39.75 with the bat during the tournament.

He scored 3 half centuries, dismissed 21 players while in gloves in his first five matches in Asia Cup 2008.

In the first innings of the first Test match against Australia in October 2014, Sarfraz scored his century in just 80 balls and went on to finish his innings with 109 in just 105 balls with Pakistan leaving Australia into a trouble. Australia went on to lose the match with a mighty margin of 221 runs.

While playing against Sri Lanka in 2015, he scored 96 runs off just 85 balls. During the innings, he became 7th Pakistani wicket-keeper to reach 1000 runs. He shares the record with Imtiaz Ahmed, who had also scored 1000 runs in 28 innings.

As of June 2017, Sarfraz has 418 catches and 44 stumpings under his belt in the First-class format.

He was called to the Pakistan International team after he led his team to bag the ICC U-19 World Cup 2006 against India in a low scoring encounter. Pakistan had scored just 109 runs and while bowling, they bowled the Indian cricket team out for just 71.

His sudden oust from the two T20 matches against Sri Lanka in 2015 drew the attention of media which later became an unnecessary issue according to the Pakistan head coach Waqar Younis. He said that these headlines overshadow their performance and past victories against the Sri Lankan cricket team.

In June 2017, after Pakistan had won their last pool match of Champions Trophy against Sri Lanka to make it to the semifinals, Sarfraz was fined 20% of his match fees by the Panel of ICC Match Referees after they found Pakistan to be one over short when time allowances were taken into consideration. The verdict said if Pakistan team violated the Article 2.5.1 of the ICC Code of Conduct for players and player support panel, skipper of the team could face one match ban in the tournament. All the other players were fined 10% of their match fees under the law.

In December 2015, ‘Quetta Gladiators’ picked him up for the 2016 season of Pakistan Super League (PSL) and was also selected to lead the team. The team, however, could not bag the trophy after getting to taste a defeat by the hands of ‘Islamabad United.’ Despite the defeat, Sarfraz was the youngest and most successful captain of the 2016 season of the tournament.

After Azhar Ali stepped down as the captain of Pakistan from One Day format, Sarfraz was selected by the Pakistan Cricket Board to fill the vacant position. His first series as a captain of ODI was a 2-1 victory over West Indies. The same year, he was named as the vice-captain of Pakistan Test team.
